A rescue diver has died during an ongoing recovery mission in the Maldives, where teams are searching for the bodies of four Italian scuba divers who were killed in a tragic underwater cave accident earlier this week.

According to local authorities and international reports, the Maldivian diver was part of an eight-member team deployed in Vaavu Atoll, an area known for deep and complex cave systems. The team was attempting to recover the remaining victims of a fatal dive involving five Italian nationals who disappeared while exploring underwater caves at depths of around 50 to 60 meters.

Officials confirmed that one body had already been recovered shortly after the incident, while the other four divers were believed to be trapped inside a deep, multi-chambered cave system. The recovery operation has been described as extremely dangerous due to strong currents, low visibility, and the technical difficulty of navigating the submerged passages.

During the ongoing search efforts, the rescue diver reportedly became unwell while working at depth and was later pronounced dead after being brought to medical care. Early reports suggest that the cause may be linked to diving-related complications, though an official investigation is still underway.

The tragedy has intensified concerns surrounding the safety of deep cave diving operations in the region, already regarded as one of the most challenging environments for underwater rescue missions. Authorities in both the Maldives and Italy are continuing coordinated efforts to recover the remaining bodies and investigate the circumstances of the accident.

Officials have described the incident as a devastating double tragedy—first the loss of the Italian divers, and now the death of a rescuer who was attempting to bring them home.
