South Africa Launches Revolutionary HIV Prevention Treatment

Jun 06, 2026  Elias Ntezimana  53 views

South Africa on Friday officially launched Lenacapavir, a groundbreaking HIV prevention treatment that has been described as revolutionary by health experts. Administered through a single injection every six months, the drug has demonstrated an effectiveness rate close to 100% in preventing HIV infection during clinical studies.

President Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed the launch as a powerful sign of hope for a country that continues to face one of the world's largest HIV epidemics, with more than one in ten South Africans living with the virus. As part of the initial rollout, nearly 40,000 doses have been distributed to 360 clinics across the country. Health authorities believe the treatment could significantly strengthen HIV prevention efforts and mark a turning point in public health across Africa.
