Response Intensifies in Eastern DRC as Bundibugyo Ebola Outbreak Spreads

Jun 05, 2026  Elias Ntezimana  42 views

The response to the Ebola outbreak caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain has accelerated significantly as the number of cases continues to rise across several provinces in eastern DRC. Health teams are expanding surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing, and patient care in an effort to break chains of transmission. The World Health Organization, the Africa CDC, and other partners have increased their support, while neighboring countries have strengthened border screening and preparedness measures. The outbreak, which has spread across Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces, has become a major public health concern due to rapid community transmission and the absence of an approved vaccine

specifically targeting the Bundibugyo strain. Despite ongoing challenges linked to insecurity, misinformation, and limited healthcare infrastructure, authorities remain determined to contain the epidemic and prevent further regional spread.
