Seoul Promises Action After Investigation

South Korea has officially condemned the recent attack targeting a commercial cargo vessel linked to a Korean shipping company in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes.

According to officials in Seoul, the vessel suffered serious damage after being struck earlier this month while operating near waters close to the United Arab Emirates. The incident reportedly caused a fire in the engine section of the ship, forcing authorities to launch an urgent investigation.

South Korean national security officials described the assault as an unjustifiable attack against a civilian commercial vessel. The government stated that the ship was operating legally and had not violated any maritime restrictions in the area at the time of the incident.

The damaged vessel, identified as the HMM-operated cargo ship “Namu,” underwent forensic inspection at a port in Dubai. Investigators reportedly discovered structural damage near the rear left section of the ship, damage that was not immediately visible after the explosion.

National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac strongly criticized the attack during a media briefing, emphasizing that South Korea would respond appropriately once investigators determine who was responsible.

The government has not officially blamed any country so far. However, the incident comes amid rising tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, where military confrontations and attacks on shipping traffic have increased in recent months.

Iran has previously denied involvement in attacks targeting commercial vessels in the region. The Iranian embassy in South Korea said it currently has no official statement regarding the latest accusations.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most sensitive shipping corridors in the world because a significant percentage of global oil exports pass through the narrow waterway every day. Any disruption in the region can quickly impact global energy markets and international trade.

Security analysts warn that continued instability in the Gulf region could increase risks for international cargo companies and oil transport operations.

South Korean authorities said they will continue cooperating with international partners and maritime experts while the investigation remains ongoing.

Sources familiar with the matter say additional security measures for Korean-operated vessels may also be considered in the coming weeks.
