How Do Hormones Act?

يونيو 13, 2026  Elias Ntezimana  63 مشاهدة

Hormones are secreted by endocrine glands such as the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries, and testes. Once released, they enter the bloodstream, which transports them throughout the body until they reach their target cells or organs.

For a hormone to have an effect, it must bind to a specific receptor located on the surface or inside the target cell. This interaction is often compared to a key fitting into a lock. Only cells that possess the correct receptor can respond to a particular hormone.

When a hormone binds to its receptor, it triggers a series of biological reactions within the cell. These reactions may stimulate or inhibit cellular activities, regulate gene expression, influence protein synthesis, or modify the cell's metabolism. Through these mechanisms, hormones control how cells function and respond to changing conditions.

Hormones regulate numerous physiological processes, including growth, development, reproduction, metabolism, blood sugar regulation, water balance, and responses to stress. They help maintain homeostasis, which is the stable internal environment necessary for normal body function.

For example, insulin, produced by the pancreas, lowers blood glucose levels by promoting the uptake of glucose into cells. Adrenaline, produced by the adrenal glands, prepares the body for emergency situations by increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and energy production.

Hormonal activity is usually controlled by feedback mechanisms. When hormone levels become too high, signals are sent to reduce hormone production. When levels become too low, hormone secretion increases. This regulation helps maintain balance within the body.

Conclusion

Hormones act as chemical messengers that travel through the bloodstream to specific target cells. By binding to specialized receptors, they regulate and coordinate many vital functions, ensuring the proper functioning, adaptation, and survival of the organism.
